1745 Association proposed outing, Sunday 19th April.

As you may know the 1745 Association recently installed a plaque on the exterior wall of The Craggan Hotel, Melness to commemorate the naval incident in the Kyle of Tongue on 25 March 1746. The Jacobite sloop “Le Prince Charles”, formerly HMS “Hazard” was driven aground on the headland at Ard Skinid. The officers of the sloop were captured along with its cargo of gold destined for the army of Prince Charles Edward.

On Sunday 19 April the association is considering hiring a coach or minibus to transport those interested from central Inverness to the Kyle of Tongue which is 85 miles away on the north coast with an approximate driving time of perhaps two and a half hours through interesting and dramatic countryside. Upon arrival a short PowerPoint presentation and talk will be followed by an unveiling ceremony. Then we will take lunch in the hotel, followed by a short walk perhaps and then the drive back to Inverness, arriving no later than 6pm.

I have had a quote from a coach company for £600.00 which is probably too much for the number of likely participants to bear. Other choices of travel might be to hire a self-drive  9 seater minibus at about £100.00 plus petrol costs. An alternative might be for some of those wishing to attend to use their own cars perhaps sharing fuel costs with others. I am beginning to think this is the best option.

Lunch will be paid for at the discretion of the individual, although I should point out that the Craggan Hotel provides the only catering facility in the immediate area. You could bring a packed lunch if you prefer.

The event will not be limited to members if the 1745 Association. Friends and/or members of other organisations are welcome so please let others know if you think they might like to come along.

I am interested to know how many might attend. Please indicate your thoughts,  without final commitment,  to Stevelord888@gmail.com. If you are of the opinion that travel by private car might be a good option and are willing to either provide a vehicle or share with others please let me know.
